What are spider veins?
Spider veins are the small, dilated blood vessels that appear on the surface of the skin. They are often found near the nostrils, on the tip of the nose, in front of the ears, on the cheeks and chin, and the legs. As we age, our skin loses volume and becomes more translucent. This can make blood vessels much more evident and visible. Genetics can also play a role, and often sun damage will exacerbate the condition. Thankfully, this is only a cosmetic concern and does not include symptoms or medical risks.
What causes spider veins?
Unhealthy valves inside larger “feeder veins” cause spider veins to develop on the legs, hands. As a result, blood flows backward instead of upward toward the heart. This backed-up blood can lead to non-functional, “dead end” veins that appear underneath the surface of the skin as spider veins.
Even though spider veins pose no health risk, many people want to remove them due to their unsightly appearance. If you have tolerated this condition for years, we can provide you with a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment.
