Why do scars form?

Scars can occur due to a variety of circumstances including accidents, skin conditions like acne, surgical scarring, or as a result of certain diseases.

When recovering from an injury or skin condition, your skin cells produce collagen at a quicker rate than your body’s natural collagen production to repair the wound. This results in a scar, which is an area of skin that is typically thicker and not as flexible as the rest of your skin.

The appearance of scars vary, depending on what caused them, how your body heals as a result, your natural skin tone, and the location on the body. Scars may be flat, raised (also called a keloid scar), or depressed. They can also vary in size, texture, and color.

What causes acne scars?

Acne scars generally result from inflamed blemishes caused by enlarged skin pores. Skin pores can swell up from excessive oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a break in the follicle wall. Minor cracks in the follicle wall do not take as long to heal, but a major one can cause infected material to spill out into surrounding tissue to create deeper lesions.

Although our bodies do have a self-repair system, it is reliant on collagen — which we produce less of as we age, making it harder for acne scars to fade.

If you do have existing scars:

  • Stay out of the sun. Excessive sun exposure can darken acne scars and make them more visible.
  • Avoid over-scrubbing when you wash your face. Friction will irritate inflamed skin.
  • Never pick at your scars. Bacteria from your hands and nails can result in the formation of new cysts.

Scars can take a toll on your confidence. Thankfully, new technology and treatments make it possible for a complete skin refresh. At Skin Medical Aesthetics in Windham, Maine, we provide scar revision with the ICON laser system. ICON uses a fractional laser to revitalize scar tissue by encouraging natural skin cell turnover. The laser breaks up scar tissues and promotes regeneration.

As new skin cells develop, they will improve the texture, tone, and overall appearance of the skin. Scar revision treatments with ICON deliver safe results that work with your body’s healing process. Treatments are suitable for most skin types and areas, including delicate areas of the face.
